What’s the big idea?

“Small Talk” isn’t just a cute name for a blog. It’s a reminder that the core of communications is simple conversation. It’s not a new idea. FDR’s fireside chats in the 1930s illustrated how the mass media could seem intensely personal. Today’s communicators have a vastly expanded tool kit, but it still comes down to the ability to reach individuals and engage in clear, consistent and sincere conversations.

Visitors to this page will see a range of comments on both global and local issues. One regular theme will be that despite the plethora of new tools to reach and interact with audiences there is very little “new” about the art of good communication. I am going to try and post on a regular basis and, hopefully, contribute something useful to the very broad discussion of how brand building and public relations practices work when the line between one-to-many and one-to-one communications is practically erased.
